Celebrate Christmas: Glitter Dough

Glitter dough is a great gift for kids of any age (except those young enough to want to eat the stuff). This recipe is infinitely superior to the store-bought kind. Use icing food-coloring paste if possible; it creates a deep color that regular food coloring cannot match.

What you will need:

3 cups flour
1-1/2 cups salt
6 teaspoons cream of tartar (acts as a preservative)
3 cups water
3 to 4 tablespoons vegetable oil
Icing food coloring (available at craft and baking-supply stores)

How to do it:

Mix together the dry ingredients (except the glitter) in a big pot. Add the water, oil, and food coloring, and whisk until all lumps are gone and the food coloring is incorporated. With a grown-up's help, place the mixture over medium heat and stir until the dough thickens and gathers into a big ball. Let cool completely.

When the dough is cool, knead in the glitter. The dough will keep several weeks in a plastic bag or covered bowl (no need to refrigerate). Pack it into a plastic container with a lid and wrap to give as a gift.
