Dear America Across the Wide and Lonesome Prairie Oregon Trail Westward Expansion Unit Study Activities

Dear America: Across the Wide and Lonesome Prairie
An Oregon Trail Unit Study

Welcome to our new student-created series of literature-based mini unit studies!

This unit is based on the book Across the Wide and Lonesome Prairie: The Oregon Trail Diary of Hattie Campbell from the Dear America book series. In easy-to-read diary form, the Dear America book series is popular with children who enjoy historical fiction and also for otherwise reluctant readers. While many of the titles are fictional accounts, several are based on stories of the authors' ancestors. All are well-researched and offer an enjoyable way for children to learn history. Much like the well-known Childhood of Famous Americans series, the Dear America books provide an accessible bridge between literature and history -- and many children "fall in love" with history -- and reading -- because of this delightful series of books. Unlike the American Girl series, you will find several titles in this series that interest boys as well as girls.

Our Across the Wide and Lonesome Prairie unit was written by almost-13-year-old Hannah Penn. She lives in Georgia, where she is a homeschooled student. Hannah will be writing more units from the Dear America series for EasyFunSchool.com and she is open to requests! (Just use our "feedback" link at the left for more information.)
