An Edible Aquarium

This is a really fun and inexpensive activity to add to a study on oceanography or amphibians. I saw an example of this at a state fair and had to give it a try. Its really cool and the kids get a bang out of it! If you allow the kids to prepare this, they get a dose of math and science without even realizing it.

SUPPLIES/INGREDIENTS:

1 pkG. Jello Berry blue*
1 cup Boiling water
2 cups Ice cubes
Gummy fish*

DIRECTIONS:

1. Dissolve jello in the boiling water.
2. Add ice cubes, stirring until jello thickens. This will take about 3-5 minutes.
3. Remove any unmelted ice and spoon jello into to clear sided bowl(s).
4. Poke 3 or 4 gummy fish into each dish of slightly thickened jello.
5. Refrigerate at least 30 minute to allow it time to set.

*If you are unable to find the berry blue flavor from jello or any of its competitors, use plain gelatin such as the store brand Knox, and add blue food coloring and/or flavoring to suit your taste.

Another alternative would be to add a couple of drops of blue food coloring to lemon jello to obtain the color green, or just to use lime flavored jello.

Gummy fish are a kind of candy pretty widely available where I live (similar to Gummy Bears), however, you can use other candies or even plastic animals just make sure that you consider any possible choking hazards if you are preparing this for very young children.
