World War I: Geography

Geography played a pivotal role before and during World War I. Its important to be able to locate the major countries involved in the “war to end all wars” and recognize why they made the alliances they did.

Click on the word “map” to view a blank map of Europe: MAP. Print this map out to use with the following activity.

Locate each of the countries below. Color the “Allies” red. Color the “Central Powers” countries purple. Color the “Neutral Nations” orange.

The Allies:
Albania
Belgium
France
Great Britain
Greece
Italy
Portugal
Romania
Russian
Serbia

The Central Powers:
Austria-Hungary
Bulgaria
Germany
Ottoman Empire (aka Turkey)

Neutral Nations:
Denmark
Finland
Iceland
Netherlands
Norway
Spain
Sweden
Switzerland

For further discussion: Look at your map closely. How do you think the “Central Powers” got that name? Why do you think some of the countries made the alliances that they did? Why did they declare war on who they did?
