Alphabet Ideas: Letter Bb

Here are lots of good ideas from all over the place for introducing the letter B. Most of these activites use the across-the-curriculum approach. These ideas are not just for preschoolers, but can be used remedially for any level, and for teaching students whose first language is not English.

Lesson Ideas & Activities:

Mix some liquid detergent and water in a bowl. Let the child blow bubbles.

Play Hide the B. Cut a large, capital or lower case letter B out of poster board or construction paper. Hide the letter somewhere, either in the open and slightly camouflaged or near an object that would begin with the letter B. Let the child(ren) look for the letter. You can say getting warm as they get closer to finding the letter or you can clap faster or slower depending on how close they are to the letter.

Think of all the names that start with the letter B: Bob, Berniece, Bo, Ben, Benjamin, Billy, Bart, Brenda, Brad, Betty, Barbara, etc.

Learn about bees. You can even take a field trip to a bee farm if there is one in your area.

Pretend you are on a treasure hunt. Find things around the house that start with the letter B that could be the treasure.

Learn about birds. You could get a book(s) from the library or watch a Natural Geographic video.

Try bird watching. Just sit outside and see how many different birds you can see.

Create your own book. You could make a picture book by letthing them cut pictures out of magazines or they could draw their own pictures.

Go on a make believe trip to cities, countries or continents that begin with the letter B. Some examples could be Baltimore (Maryland, USA), Barbados, Brazil, Britain, Belgrade, British Columbia, etc. You could find these on a globe or map, pretend to take an airplane trip there and then sample foods from that area or learn something new about that geographic area. This would be a great way to introduce geography and map skills. You could also watch a video or tv broadcast about that area. Check your local library for what's available.

Play with beach balls.

Glue different types of dried beans onto paper or onto a B cut out of construction paper.

Blow up and play with balloons.

Go outside and look at the world with binoculars.

Have a birthday cake for your child's favorite doll or you can use the character B.B. Bunny from the song below.

Paint butterflies with multicolored wings. You could also find out about butterflies from books at your local library.

For a math activity, you could allow them to string beads.

For science, how about studying bones. You could look at a human or animal skeleton. How are they the same? How are they different?

Play toss with a bean bag.

Bake some bread with your child.

Make homemade butter. These are the easiest directions that I've found: Very easy - pour whipping cream and a touch of salt into baby food jars - shake until butter forms

Have a picnic lunch on a blanket.

Create your own band with homemade musical instruments.

Play baseball. You can also learn about the history of baseball and about the lives of some of the more famous players.
